Fitbit might be working on a super-cheap subscription plan (Updated)
- Fitbit is apparently surveying users about a potential cheaper subscription plan.
- It could cost $2.99 per month and provide access to lifetime historical fitness data.
- Fitbit says it’s not making any changes to Fitbit Premium pricing as of now.
Update: February 24, 2021 (11:23 PM ET): Fitbit has emailed Android Authority an official response regarding the survey it floated about a cheaper subscription plan. The company says it has no plans of announcing any changes to Fitbit Premium pricing at this point. You can read the full statement below:
We continue to invest in Fitbit Premium, our subscription service launched in 2019, to bring even more health and wellness insights and motivation to people around the world. Like many brands, we occasionally survey our user community to gain valuable feedback on everything from features they might like to see to pricing, and this helps us continue to deliver accessible tools that will help users meet their unique health goals. We are not announcing any changes to Fitbit Premium pricing at this time and want to assure customers that as stated, we will continue to protect Fitbit users’ privacy by maintaining strong data privacy and security protections, giving you control of your data and staying transparent about what we collect and why.
Original article: February 22, 2021 (1:02 AM ET): If you’re a Fitbit user, you probably already know about Fitbit Premium. The subscription service offers fitness enthusiasts detailed insights into their health metrics, including tips on decoding data, advanced sleep stats, training plans, and more. The service currently costs $9.99 a month or $79.99 a year, but the company might soon extend a third cheaper plan to its users.
According to a customer survey accessed by Android Central, Fitbit is asking users to consider a new service tier that costs just $2.99 per month. That’s less than half of the existing monthly subscription price of Fitbit Premium. However, unlike what you get with the costlier plans, this cheap Fitbit subscription plan may not have a lot to offer.
As per the survey, the new tier will give Fitbit users access to additional historical data. The current free Fitbit plan only allows users to see health data from the past 30 days. For some metrics, the information access is further limited to seven days. The cheaper $2.99 plan could extend these timelines. Fitbit reportedly describes it as follows:
See your activity, sleep, stress, and health metrics for the last month, year, forever with unlimited historical data.
As you might know, Google recently completed its acquisition of Fitbit. Under the terms of the deal, the Mountain View-based tech giant cannot use user data for ad targeting. Hence the new subscription plan might be one way Google is hoping to monetize Fitbit data and boost revenue.
There’s no official word on if and when Fitbit will introduce the new plan. We’ll surely update our comprehensive Fitbit guide in case the cheaper plan goes official.
