What’s new on Amazon Prime this December: Mrs. Maisel is back and more
The holiday season is almost upon us, which means new content on Amazon Prime Video. December brings us new seasons of beloved Amazon Prime original series like The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, as well as a fun new movie featuring Eddy Redmayne. Surprisingly, there are fewer additions to the catalog compared to November and no flood of cheesy Christmas flicks. Quite the opposite. Many critically acclaimed movies like The Aviator have made their way to Prime Video. So, without further ado, here is all the content you need to look out for in December 2019.
New on Amazon Prime in December 2019 — highlights
1. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel: Season 3 (December 6)
A 50s housewife turned raunchy comedian — this is the marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Her titular show returns for its third season on Amazon Prime this December after snagging another slew of Emmys and Golden Globes. And Midge’s career is looking up. After some troubles in her personal life and one incredibly successful late-night telethon appearance, she is headed on a six-month tour of the US and Europe as the opening act of singer Shy Baldwin. But how will Joel cope on his own and how will Midge and Susie handle the big leagues? They are about to get a taste of real showbiz and it might not be as sweet as they’d expected. If you somehow haven’t watched the show yet, there’s no better time to binge all three seasons than now.
2. The Expanse: Season 4 (December 14)
Planetary colonization might be a distant dream for us today, but in this universe, humanity is a multiplanetary species. The Expanse is a sci-fi favorite that has been brought back for its fourth season by Amazon Studios after the show’s cancelation last year. The story continues where it left off — Earth and Mars have declared war on each other and the violence only seems to be escalating. At the same time, the Rocinante crew travels beyond the Ring Gate in search of new worlds. When they discover a resource-rich Earth-like planet, humans from all corners of the Solar System hastily try to make their claim on it, while ignoring the dangers that lurk around them. If that has piqued your interest, you only have to wait until December 14 to watch the latest season of The Expanse.
3. The Aeronaunts (December 20)
Before airplanes and rockets, those who dared to reach for the sky journeyed up in balloons. The Aeronauts is loosely based on the career of one such pioneer — British scientist James Glaisher. Played by Eddie Redmayne, he seeks the help of Amelia Wren — a daredevil balloon pilot, in an attempt to reach new heights and advance Victorian understanding of weather patterns. The film promises to be an exhilarating adventure that will keep you at the edge of your seat. Its special effects are stunning, but not everything was achieved through the magic of cinema. The crew actually built a period accurate gas balloon and filmed some scenes of Redmayne and Felicity Jones up in the air. If this adventure movie has already captured your attention, don’t forget to add it to your watchlist, since it’s arriving later this month on December 20.
