November was a fairly quiet month for Android development, with the official Android Developers blog mostly just recapping the events of the Dev Summit. That’s not to say that a few key pieces of news haven’t been able to sneak in under the radar, though.

This is a time for reflection and preparation then, so here is the latest Android Developer news and some useful features to help you plan for 2020!

Introducing Google Play Points in the US — Google Play Points is a rewards program that is expanding to the US after successful launches in Japan and Korea. The idea is that users can now earn points for the purchases they make through the Play store. These can then be redeemed for special items and discounts in select apps. The hope is that this can drive more sales, which is good news for devs! Whether there is enough incentive there though, is up for debate.

Still Using InstallBroadcast? Switch to the Play Referrer API by March 1, 2020 — In 2017, Google announced the Play Install Referrer API, to provide more reliable referrer information from the Play Store. If you’re still using the old install_referrer intent broadcast, then now is the time to switch. The older method will be depreciated from March 1.

3 things to know about Kotlin from Android Dev Summit 2019 — Kotlin is very much the darling of Google development these days. Here, Google shares three tidbits of information regarding the programming language on Android.
