Chinese retailer usurps Amazon as the biggest shopping app in the US
- Amazon is no longer the top shopping app in the US.
- Chinese retailer Shein has taken the top spot in the country on Android and iOS.
- The app’s topping the charts across multiple nations, too, according to data.
Amazon has long been the dominant shopping app on Android in the US. But its position is now under threat from a Chinese retailer. According to tracking firm data, Shein has now overthrown Amazon as the most installed shopping app on the platform in the US.
Shein was founded in 2008, according to TechCrunch, and may now be valued at $15 billion according to estimates. The fashion retailer is based in China and reportedly controls its production lines from top to bottom. This means it can adjust on the fly to global trends and demand. It also supports PayPal payments, features a live chat customer care service, and free shipping for orders over $49. Its growth across the US is likely partially due to these factors.
It took the top spot as the US’ most installed shopping app on May 11. Per App Annie, it continues to hold that position at the time of writing. Globally, it sits at the top of at least 14 nation’s app charts. Shein is now ranked as the 17th most popular app in the US overall, too. It’s rise isn’t limited to Android, though. Shein also ranks as the biggest shopping app on iOS in more than 50 countries, per Sensor Tower data.
Shein isn’t available in some markets though. It was among more than 50 Chinese apps banned by the Indian government in late 2020.
