Belkin’s new GaN chargers can power your MacBook Pro in a tiny package

CES is always full of new gizmos and gadgets, but one thing a lot of people don’t talk about is the improvements to smaller things like chargers. Belkin has a huge number of new chargers and other accessories at the show, but probably the most interesting is its new line of gallium-nitride (GaN) chargers.

Belkin’s new line of Boost Charge chargers come in three speeds for ultra-fast charging. You can get them in 30W, 60W, and 68W variants, all of which are surprisingly small for the amount of power they provide. Belkin touts the 60W charger as one of the smallest chargers that will work for the MacBook Pro, though it won’t charge quite as fast as most of the stock chargers.

Gallium-nitride is much more efficient than traditional chargers, with up to 40% less power loss. This means you can pump a lot more power into your device with a much smaller device. Now that the technology is finally maturing and cheap enough to mass-produce, you’ll start to see it much more often in consumer devices.

Belkin says its new Boost Charge GaN chargers will range between £34.99-£59.99 and will be available starting in April.

Besides these GaN chargers, Belkin is introducing a huge range of other products at the show as well. It’s announcing 10,000mAh and 20,000mAh power banks, a 3-in-1 wireless charger for the iPhone, AirPods and Apple Watch, a 10W wireless charging stand-speaker combo, dual 10W wireless charging pads, and a 10W wireless car charger. All of these products will be available by May of 2020.
