Best pop up camera phones and slider phones to buy in 2019

OnePlus 7 Pro pop up camera

Pop up camera phones and slider phones are awesome for a number of reasons. They allow for higher screen-to-body ratios, as there’s no need for a notch or a thick bezel to house the selfie camera. They also have a futuristic vibe and give users concerned with privacy peace of mind, as the front-facing camera isn’t staring at them the whole time.

The first smartphone with a pop up camera was the Vivo Nex, which launched in 2018. Since then, many other pop up phones have hit the market. We’ll show you the best ones in this post, but before we jump in, please note that this article is divided into two sections. The first lists the best phones with motorized pop up cameras, while the second shows you the best slider phones — phones with hidden selfie cameras that are revealed when you slide the display down manually.

Best pop up camera phones:

Editor’s note: We’ll be updating this list of the best pop up camera phones and slider phones regularly as new devices launch.

1. OnePlus 7T Pro

OnePlus 7T Pro pop up camera phone

The OnePlus 7T Pro packs the latest Snapdragon 855 Plus chipset along with as much as 12GB of RAM under the hood if you go with the McLaren Edition. It also features an in-display fingerprint sensor, three cameras at the back, and a 16MP pop up camera. The display comes in a 6.67 inches and offers QHD+ resolution. It also has a 90Hz refresh rate.

However, the handset does have a few drawbacks. It doesn’t have an official IP rating, lacks a headphone jack, and doesn’t support wireless charging. Nevertheless, it’s still one of the best pop up camera phones you can get.

The OnePlus 7 Pro is also a great option for those looking for a phone with a pop up camera. It has the Snapdragon 855 chipset instead of the 855 Plus and comes with a slightly smaller battery. Other than that, it’s pretty much the same as the 7T Pro, which is good news for US buyers as the OnePlus 7T Pro isn’t coming to North America.

OnePlus 7T Pro specs:

  • Display: 6.67-inch, QHD+
  • SoC: Snapdragon 855 Plus
  • RAM: 8/12GB
  • Storage: 256GB
  • Cameras: 48, 16, and 8MP
  • Front camera: 16MP
  • Battery: 4,085mAh
  • Software: Android 10

2. Xiaomi Mi 9T and Mi 9T Pro

Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro glacier blue back angle

The Xiaomi Mi 9T and Mi 9T Pro are similar in many ways. They look more or less the same and both feature a 20MP pop up camera that elevates from the top edge in just 0.8 seconds. There are six pop up sounds available to choose from, which is a nice touch.

The main difference between the two phones is the chipset. The Pro model is powered by the Snapdragon 855, while the standard Mi 9T packs the Snapdragon 730 under the hood. The Pro also offers faster charging. Both devices sport an in-display fingerprint scanner, three rear cameras, and a 4,000mAh battery.

Both the Xiaomi Mi 9T and Mi 9T Pro have been released in Europe, but go under different names in other countries like India. The former is called the Redmi K20 and the latter goes by Redmi K20 Pro. You can get both of them from Amazon via the buttons below.

Xiaomi Mi 9T specs:

  • Display: 6.39-inch, Full HD+
  • SoC: Snapdragon 730
  • RAM: 6GB
  • Storage: 64/128GB
  • Cameras: 48, 13, and 8MP
  • Front camera: 16MP
  • Battery: 4,000mAh
  • Software: Android 9.0 Pie

Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro specs:

  • SoC: Snapdragon 855
  • RAM: 6/8GB
  • Storage: 64/128/256GB
  • Cameras: 48, 13, and 8MP
  • Front camera: 20MP
  • Battery: 4,000mAh
  • Software: Android 9.0 Pie

3. Oppo Reno 10x Zoom and Reno 2

Oppo Reno 10x Zoom sharkfin pop up

This phone stands out because of its unique 16MP shark fin style pop up selfie camera. Because of its shape, the pop up module is larger than those of the OnePlus 7T Pro and Xiaomi Mi 9T and also houses the earpiece as well as a front and rear flash.

Editor's Pick

The phone sports a rear triple-camera setup with 5x optical and 10x hybrid zoom. It also features an in-display fingerprint scanner, a large 6.6-inch display, and a 4,065 battery. There’s plenty of power under the hood thanks to the Snapdragon 855 chipset and as much as 8GB of RAM.

If you want to save some money, the more recent Oppo Reno 2 is a better option. It also sports a fin-style pop up selfie camera but offers less when it comes to specs and features. You can check out how the two phones compare below. But keep in mind that the Reno 2 isn’t available in Europe like the 10X Zoom, but it was released in India and a few other markets.

Oppo Reno 10x Zoom specs:

  • Display: 6.6-inch, Full HD+
  • SoC: Snapdragon 855
  • RAM: 6/8GB
  • Storage: 128/256GB
  • Cameras: 48, 13, and 8MP
  • Front camera: 16MP
  • Battery: 4,065mAh
  • Software: Android 9.0 Pie

Oppo Reno 2:

  • Display: 6.5-inch, Full HD+
  • SoC: Snapdragon 730G
  • RAM: 8GB
  • Storage: 128/256GB
  • Cameras: 48, 13, 8, and 2MP
  • Front camera: 16MP
  • Battery: 4,000mAh
  • Software: Android 9.0 Pie

4. Asus Zenfone 6

Slider phones

The ZenFone 6‘s selfie camera is different from the other phones on this list. Instead of popping out from the top edge, it flips from the back to the front. That means the rear cameras, which feature 48 and 13MP sensors, are also used for taking selfies.

In addition to its innovative camera, there are a couple of other things that make the Zenfone 6 special. It runs a near-stock version of Android, packs a massive 5,000mAh battery, and has a headphone jack on board. It even supports expandable storage and sports a gorgeous design.

The phone offers great bang for the buck — check pricing below. However, that means the company had to cut some corners. There’s no IP rating or wireless charging. The phone also comes with an LCD screen instead of an OLED one found on most high-end phones. Nevertheless, it’s still one of the best pop up camera phones you can currently get your hands on.

Asus Zenfone 6 specs:

  • Display: 6.4-inch, Full HD+
  • SoC: Snapdragon 855
  • RAM: 6/8GB
  • Storage: 64/128/256GB
  • Cameras: 48 and 13MP
  • Front cameras: 48 and 13MP
  • Battery: 5,000mAh
  • Software: Android 9.0 Pie

5. Samsung Galaxy A80

Samsung Galaxy A80 flip pop up camera

This phone doesn’t have a traditional pop up camera that elevates from the top edge of the phone. Instead, it has what’s best described as a pop up flip camera, as the main camera module at the back slides up and then rotates to the front. It’s basically a different — more complicated — version of the camera found on the Asus Zenfone 6.

The Galaxy A80 is not a flagship, but it still has more than enough power for the average user. It’s powered by the Snapdragon 730 chipset, has 8GB of RAM, and sports a large 6.7-inch display. Unlike Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S series, the A80 does not feature a headphone jack or support expandable storage.

The handset is available in a number of markets including Europe. It was not released in the US.

Samsung Galaxy A80 specs:

  • Display: 6.7-inch, Full HD+
  • SoC: Snapdragon 730
  • RAM: 8GB
  • Storage: 128GB
  • Cameras: 48 and 8MP + ToF
  • Front cameras: 48 and 8MP + ToF
  • Battery: 3,700mAh
  • Software: Android 9.0 Pie

6. Realme X

Realme X pop up selfie camera close up

The 16MP pop up camera elevates from the upper edge of the Realme X in just 0.7 seconds. It’s centrally positioned to allow for more natural-looking selfies and auto-retracts the moment the phone detects a fall.

The Realme X has one of the best cameras in its class.

Like the Galaxy A80, the Realme X is a mid-ranger. It packs the Snapdragon 710 chipset under the hood along with up to 8GB of RAM. There’s a dual-camera setup at the back that’s one of the best in the segment and is capable of capturing great images in low-light conditions. The handset also comes with an in-display fingerprint scanner, a headphone jack, and a large 6.53-inch display.

The Realme X is definitely one of the best pop up camera phones on a budget out there, but getting your hands on can be a challenge. The device is already available in a few markets including India, but it has not yet been released in Western markets.

Realme X specs:

  • Display: 6.53-inch, Full HD+
  • SoC: Snapdragon 710
  • RAM: 4/6/8GB
  • Storage: 64/128GB
  • Cameras: 48 and 5MP
  • Front camera: 16MP
  • Battery: 3,765mAh
  • Software: Android 9.0 Pie

7. Honor 9X

Honor 9X front

The Honor 9X sports a 16MP pop up camera module that includes fall and downward pressure detection, which should protect it from damage. The phone’s display measures 6.59 inches and offers Full HD+ resolution.

The 9X is a mid-range handset, but it still has more than enough power for the average user. It comes with the Kirin 710F chipset, up to 6GB of RAM, and three rear cameras. It also has an in-display fingerprint scanner and a headphone jack.

Yes, the phone comes with all the usual Google apps installed, including the Play Store. Honor released the 9X in Europe and a few other regions, with the US not being one of them — get it via the button below.

Honor 9X specs:

  • Display: 6.59-inch, Full HD+
  • SoC: Kirin 710F
  • RAM: 4/6GB
  • Storage: 64/128GB
  • Cameras: 48, 8, and 2MP
  • Front camera: 16MP
  • Battery: 4,000mAh
  • Software: Android 9.0 Pie

8. Vivo Nex 3

Vivo nex 3 5g selfie camera pop up 1

The last model on our list of the best phones with a pop up camera is the Vivo Nex 3, which has a lot going for it. It sports a large 6.89-inch display, a curved display, and high-end specs. It’s powered by the latest and greatest Snapdragon 855 Plus chipset that’s backed by 8GB of RAM.

In his review, our very own Bogdan Petrovan called it “a solid alternative to the Mate 30 Pro” due to the many similarities between the two. The Nex 3 comes with a similar design, packs a triple camera setup at the back, and is also available in a 5G variant.

It has its drawbacks, like any other phone. The software experience leaves a lot to be desired and the image quality can be inconsistent at times, among other things. But it’s still a great device overall. The Nex 3 was not released in Western markets, but you can still get it on Amazon.

Vivo Nex 3 specs:

  • Display: 6.89-inch, Full HD+
  • SoC: Snapdragon 855 Plus
  • RAM: 8GB
  • Storage: 128GB
  • Cameras: 64, 13, and 13MP
  • Front camera: 16MP
  • Battery: 4,500mAh
  • Software: Android 9.0 Pie

Wait, there’s more

These are the eight best phones with motorized pop up cameras in our opinion, although there are a few other great options out there as well.

In case having a motorized pop up camera phone isn’t your thing for whatever reason, there are also a few great slider phones to choose from. The selfie cameras on these phones are hidden from sight when not in use and they pop up on top when you slide down the screen. There’s less of a chance of the mechanism breaking since it’s not motorized, which is a good thing for many, but on the other hand, the phones don’t feel as cool or futuristic. If a slider phone is what you’re after, you can check out your best options below.

Best slider phones:

  1. Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 and Mi Mix 3 5G
  2. Honor Magic 2 and Magic 2 3D
  3. Lenovo Z5 Pro and Z5 Pro GT

Editor’s note: We’ll be updating this list of the best slider phones regularly as new devices launch.

1. Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 and Mi Mix 3 5G

Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 slider phone

The Mi Mix 3 sports two front-facing cameras, which are revealed when you slide down the phone’s display. Xiaomi also included sound effects to make sliding the phone up and down a little bit more fun.

In terms of specs, the handset is aimed at demanding users. It’s powered by the Snapdragon 845 chipset and comes with as much as 10GB of RAM. Other highlight features include 960fps slow-mo video capture, dual-frequency GPS, and an affordable price tag. All these things combined make the Mi Mix 3 one of the best slider phones you can get.

There’s also a 5G version of the Mi Mix 3 available, which was announced at MWC in February — get it here. It sports the newer Snapdragon 855 chipset and a slightly larger battery (3,800mAh vs, 3,200mAh). Most of the other specs and features are identical to those of the regular Mi Mix 3.

Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 specs:

  • Display: 6.39-inch, Full HD+
  • SoC: Snapdragon 845
  • RAM: 6/8/10GB
  • Storage: 128/256/512GB
  • Cameras: 12 and 12MP
  • Front cameras: 24 and 2MP
  • Battery: 3,200mAh
  • Software: Android 9.0 Pie

Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G specs:

  • Display: 6.39-inch, Full HD+
  • SoC: Snapdragon 855
  • RAM: 6GB
  • Storage: 64/128GB
  • Cameras: 12 and 12MP
  • Front cameras: 24 and 2MP
  • Battery: 3,800mAh
  • Software: Android 9.0 Pie

2. Honor Magic 2 and Magic 2 3D

Slider phone -- Honor Magic 2

The Honor Magic 2’s slider mechanism works the same as the one of the Mi Mix 3. When you slide down the screen, the three front-facing cameras are revealed up top.

There are two versions of the phone available. You have the regular Honor Magic 2 and the upgraded Magic 2 3D. The phones look the same and share most of the specs including the Kirin 980 chipset that also powers the Huawei P30 Pro, an in-display fingerprint scanner, and three rear cameras. The differences between them are that the 3D model also supports 3D facial recognition, has a graphene-based heat pipe for better performance under load, and comes with more storage.

Unfortunately, neither phone was officially released in Western markets. However, you can get the international model on Amazon, but it doesn’t come with a warranty.

Honor Magic 2 specs:

  • Display: 6.39-inch, Full HD+
  • SoC: Kirin 980
  • RAM: 6/8GB
  • Storage: 128/256GB
  • Cameras: 24, 16, and 16MP
  • Front cameras: 16, 2, and 2MP
  • Battery: 3,500mAh
  • Software: Android 9.0 Pie

Honor Magic 2 3D specs:

  • Display: 6.39-inch, Full HD+
  • SoC: Kirin 980

  • Cameras: 24, 16, and 16MP
  • Front cameras: 16 and 2MP + ToF
  • Battery: 3,500mAh
  • Software: Android 9.0 Pie

3. Lenovo Z5 Pro and Z5 Pro GT

Lenovo's slider phones

The last two slider phones on our list are the Lenovo’s Z5 Pro and Z5 Pro GT, which were announced in 2018. They look more or less identical — with a few design details changed here and there — and feature two front-facing cameras.

The biggest difference between the two is the chipset. The Z5 Pro comes with the Snapdragon 710 under the hood, while the GT model is powered by the Snapdragon 855. The phones share most of the other specs and features, as they both sport two rear cameras, an in-display fingerprint scanner, and a 6.39-inch display.

The biggest problem with these two phones is their availability. They aren’t on sale in Europe or the US, so you’ll have to import the model you want from China. You can order the Z5 Pro from AliExpress by clicking here or get the GT model via the button below.

Lenovo Z5 Pro specs:

  • Display: 6.39-inch, Full HD+
  • SoC: Snapdragon 710
  • RAM: 6GB
  • Storage: 64/128GB
  • Cameras: 24 and 16MP
  • Front cameras: 16 and 8MP
  • Battery: 3,350mAh
  • Software: Android 8.1 Oreo

Lenovo Z5 Pro GT specs:

  • Display: 6.39-inch, Full HD+
  • SoC: Snapdragon 855
  • RAM: 8/12GB
  • Storage: 128/256/512GB
  • Cameras: 24 and 16MP
  • Front cameras: 16 and 8MP
  • Battery: 3,350mAh
  • Software: Android 8.1 Oreo

There you have it — these are the best pop up camera phones and slider phones you can get in our opinion. We’ll make sure to update this post as soon as new ones hit the market.
