Redmi K30 phones to ditch pop-ups for dual selfie camera punch-holes

Xiaomi (so far) hasn’t delivered the Pocophone F2 that budget phone fans were hoping to see in 2019, but the company’s Redmi sub-brand helped ease the pain with the affordable and awesome Redmi K20 Pro and Redmi K20 (or Mi 9T and Mi 9T Pro in the West). Now, we’re getting our first glimpse at their successors — the Redmi K30 series.

In a post on Weibo, Redmi general manager Lu Weibing shared a teaser render of an unspecified K30 series phone with a punch-hole display and what appears to be a dual front facing selfie camera.

There’s not much you can do to improve the aesthetics of a hole in a display, but the design will be very familiar to Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus users as it’s essentially the same placement and overall look.

This also suggests Redmi is abandoning the pop-up cameras we saw on the K20 and K20 Pro. I guess they could add those in as well and have three cameras, but that’d be complete overkill.

Weibing also expanded on the phones’ 5G support. We already knew the phones would be 5G ready after thanks to the exec’s comments in August, but we’ve now got confirmation the handsets will support standalone (SA) and non-standalone (NSA) 5G. You can read about why this is significant and the difference between the two here.

In addition to the new info provided on Weibo, Redmi also touched on the possible pricing of the K30 series at a Redmi 8 event in China. According to Sparrow News, Weibing noted that the K30 will not be the most affordable 5G phone, but it won’t stray too far from the brand’s reputation for delivering affordable phones. Xiaomi already holds the mantle of the cheapest 5G phone with the €599 Mi Mix 3 5G.
