These smartphones offer the fastest download speeds in the US
We generally take fast mobile download speeds for granted, unless you live in the middle of nowhere or are in a cellular black spot. But which phone should you get if excellent connectivity is an absolute must?
OpenSignal has tested a variety of smartphones, revealing that OnePlus, LG, and Samsung phones were the top performers in terms of downloads in the U.S. market.
More specifically, the OnePlus 7 Pro, LG V35 ThinQ, LG G8 ThinQ, Samsung Galaxy S10, and Galaxy S10 Plus were deemed to be tied for first place. It’s worth noting that all of these phones bar the Galaxy S10 have a Qualcomm chipset.
Apple’s iPhones didn’t feature in the top ten, with the iPhone XS Max and iPhone XS were listed at number 43 and 47 respectively. The iPhone XS series uses Intel modems, but it’s unclear whether the modem, antennas, or other factors are to blame for the lagging performance in these tests.
It wasn’t all bad for Apple’s devices though, as iPhones achieved fourth place for upload speeds in the market. This performance put it ahead of LG, Samsung, Motorola, and HTC, but behind Huawei, OnePlus, and Google. Check out the table below.
OpenSignal also took a look at download speeds in the mid-tier and low-end categories, finding that HTC and BlackBerry (running Android) were in the top spots respectively. Mid-tier devices were deemed to be phones with LTE Categories 5 to 15, while low-tier devices were deemed to be handsets with LTE Category 4 or below.
Google, Samsung, LG, and OnePlus occupied the rest of the top five for mid-tier phones, while Sony, Samsung, OnePlus, and Motorola occupied the rest of the top spots in the low-end category.
It’s also interesting to note that, aside from OnePlus and Motorola, we don’t see any other Chinese-owned brands in the top 50. Device manufacturers like Huawei, Xiaomi, and Vivo might be globally popular, but U.S. and Chinese tensions mean it’s unlikely we’ll see them in larger numbers in the U.S. any time soon.
