Best Android phones with expandable memory (September 2019)

phones with expandable memory

A few years ago, high-end phones with expandable memory started to become a dying breed. However, while not every device may have it, this feature is certainly not going away. There are still many great phones that include microSD card slots, allowing you to expand the storage on your phone. Here are the best ones you should know about.

Best phones with expandable memory:

Editor’s note: We will be updating this list of the best phones with expandable memory regularly as new devices launch.

1. Samsung Galaxy S10 series

Samsung Galaxy S10e, S10, S10 Plus

The Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus, S10, and S10e all feature microSD card slots, allowing you to expand the memory by as much as 512GB. Combined with the high-end 1TB version of the S10 Plus, you can get as much as 1.5TB of space, which is more than some laptops!

All three phones are IP68 rated, have the same chipset under the hood, and support wireless charging. The Galaxy S10 Plus offers the most of the trio, sporting the largest display, the most RAM at 12GB, and two front-facing cameras. Most of the other specs are the same as those of the Galaxy S10, which include an in-display fingerprint scanner, three rear cameras, and a curved display.

The Galaxy S10e is the smallest and cheapest phone of the pack. It comes with two cameras at the back instead of three, a flat display, and a side-mounted fingerprint scanner. Nevertheless, it’s still more than suitable for demanding users.

2. Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus

Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus with expandable memory

Although the Galaxy S family is the most popular line of Samsung phones, the Galaxy Note line takes the power and versatility of the S line a few steps further. This is especially true with the new Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus.

Editor's Pick

Featuring the Snapdragon 855 (or the Exynos 9825, depending on market), 12GB of RAM, and a 6.8-inch AMOLED panel with the Infinity-O punch hole, this is a powerful phone. The design is equally attractive, though not necessarily massively different from the S line. On the downside, the Note 10 Plus doesn’t offer a 1TB option, but the 256 and 512GB can be upgraded with a microSD card.

For those who love the S Pen, the Note 10 Plus continues to excel. This time around the S Pen even gets a few new tricks like gesture controls that let you do things like control your smartphone camera remotely just by waving your hand in certain ways.

Galaxy Note 10 Plus specs:

  • Display: 6.8-inch, QHD+
  • SoC: SD 855 or Exynos 9825
  • RAM: 12GB
  • Storage: 256/512GB
  • Cameras: 16, 12, and 12MP + ToF
  • Front camera: 10MP

  • Software: Android 9.0 Pie

3. Sony Xperia 5

Sony Xperia 5 white in hand

The Xperia 5 sits alongside the Xperia 1 as a more compact alternative to Sony’s flagship, making it one of the smaller phones on this list. It comes with 128GB of storage that can be expanded for an additional 1TB.

The Xperia 5 sports a 6.1-inch Full HD+ display, which is a step down from the 6.5-inch 4K panel of the Xperia 1. Like its larger sibling, the phone comes with the Snapdragon 855 chipset, 6GB of RAM, and three 12MP cameras at the back. It’s also IP68 rated for protection against water and dust and has a side-mounted fingerprint scanner on board.

The Xperia 5 is already up for pre-order in the U.S. via B&H and Focus. You’ll have to wait a while to get it, though, as shipping is expected to kick off on November 5.

  • Display: 6.1-inch, Full HD+
  • SoC: Snapdragon 855
  • RAM: 6GB

4. Asus Zenfone 6

Asus Zenfone 6 with microSD card support

There are a couple of reasons that make the Asus Zenfone 6 one of the best phones with expandable memory you can get. The handset offers flagship specs at a mid-range price. It also packs a large 5,000mAh battery and runs a near-stock version of Android. But what makes it truly stand out is the flip-up camera at the back that can also be used for taking selfies.

The flip camera makes the Zenfone 6 stand out.

This unique design approach allowed Asus to create a phone without a notch or a punch-hole for the camera, giving the Zenfone 6 a high screen-to-body ratio. You can get the device with 64 or 128GB of storage that’s expandable for an additional 1TB.

Of course, the low price tag means Asus had to cut a few corners. The phone doesn’t support wireless charging, has an LCD screen instead of an OLED one found on most high-end phones, and isn’t resistant to water.

Asus Zenfone 6 specs:

  • Display: 6.4-inch, Full HD+
  • SoC: Snapdragon 855
  • RAM: 6/8GB
  • Storage: 64/128/256GB
  • Cameras: 48 and 13MP
  • Front cameras: 48 and 13MP
  • Battery: 5,000mAh
  • Software: Android 9.0 Pie

Editor's Pick

ZTE might not be a big name in Western markets, but that doesn’t mean it makes bad phones. The Axon 10 Pro has plenty to offer, including an eye-catching design and high-end specs. You get the Snapdragon 855 chipset, three rear cameras, and an in-display fingerprint scanner.

The phone has a large 6.47-inch display with curved edges and offers a near-stock Android experience. The battery life is great thanks to its 4,000mAh cell, which also supports wireless charging. All these things combined make the Axon 10 Pro one of the best phones with expandable memory on the market.

The Pocophone F1 has a fantastic price-performance ratio.

The LG G8 ThinQ supports microSD cards to up to 1TB in size and comes with 128GB of storage. Just like the V50 ThinQ, it sports a headphone jack, a quad DAC, and wireless charging. The phone is also IP68 rated and packs high-end specs including the Snapdragon 855 chipset.

The LG G8 is an innovative handset thanks to its front-facing Z camera. It can map out the veins in your palm that can then be used to unlock the device. It also lets you take a screenshot or open an app of choice with hand gestures, all without touching the screen. However, these features don’t work quite as well as advertised, as noted in our review.

Keep in mind that this isn’t the latest phones from LG’s G series. The company announced the G8X ThinQ at IFA 2019, but the handset isn’t available yet — learn more about it here.

The last model on our list of the best phones with expandable memory is the Razer Phone 2, which is aimed at gamers. You get 64GB of storage and the option of adding in a microSD card with a capacity of up to 1TB.

Editor's Pick

The Razer Phone 2 sports a vapor chamber cooling system and a design that definitely stands out. You get two loud front-facing speakers and a display featuring a 120Hz refresh rate. The handset is also IP67 rated and packs a large 4,000mAh battery.

It’s not the most powerful phone on the market, but it’s still more than suitable for demanding users. It comes with last year’s Snapdragon 845 chipset under the hood along with 8GB of RAM. It launched with a price tag of $800 but can now be yours for far less, since it has been on the market for almost a year.

  • SoC: Snapdragon 845
  • RAM: 8GB
  • Storage: 64GB
