Samsung doubling current phone storage speed with eUFS 3.0, now in production

Samsung Electronics has announced mass production on the industry’s first 512GB embedded Universal Flash Storage (eUFS) 3.0 memory solution.

The company made the announcement in a press release earlier today, revealing eUFS 3.0 delivers twice the read speeds of eUFS 2.1 and more than one-and-a-half times the write speeds.

Samsung said the new solution is “four times faster” than SATA solid state drives (SSDs), “20 times faster” than typical microSD cards, and would allow a premium smartphone to transfer “a Full HD movie to a PC in about three seconds.”

The technology is set to arrive in next-gen smartphones, including the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Fold.

These are particularly impressive numbers seeing as Samsung released an eUFS 2.1 solution only a month ago that was half as fast; we haven’t seen a generation leap like this in Samsung’s internal storage technology for more than four years. Samsung is claiming up a sequential read speed doubling over eUFS 2.1 to 2,100MB per second and a new write speed up to 410MB per second – (see the table below).

eUFS 3.0 will give high-end mobile products a significant advantage in some aspects of mobile performance (like file transfer, app installation, accessing device files, and more) over competing products, but it isn’t the only recent piece of good news for smartphone memory.

MicroSD express cards were announced just yesterday set to deliver theoretical file transfer rates of up to 985MB per second. Devices paired with one of these and Samsung’s new eUFS solution could become a performance monster.

Both 512GB eUFS 3.0 and a 128GB eUFS 3.0 solution will launch later this month while Samsung says 1TB and 256GB models are planned for the second half of the year. Let us know what you think of the developments in the comments.
