Amazon delays Prime Day in the U.S. until ‘later this year’

Amazon says it will be announcing a new date "soon."

What you need to know

  • Amazon has confirmed that it is delaying its annual Prime Day sales event in the U.S.
  • The company says it hasn't set a new date yet, but plans to hold it "later than usual" this year.
  • In India, however, the Prime Day event will begin on August 6.

Earlier this month, leaked emails revealed that Amazon was planning to delay its annual Prime Day sales event to sometime in October. The company today confirmed that it is indeed going to delay the Prime Day event in the U.S. While Amazon hasn't revealed a new date yet, it says it will be holding the event "later than usual" this year.

In a statement sent to TechCrunch, an Amazon spokesperson said:

Over the last five years, Prime Day has become a special celebration and time for Prime members to shop incredible deals for themselves and for friends and family – and it's something we look forward to every year. This year we'll be holding Prime Day later than usual, while ensuring the safety of our employees and supporting our customers and selling partners. We are excited Prime members in India will see savings on August 6-7, and that members all around the world will experience Prime Day later this year. We look forward to sharing more details soon.

While consumers in the U.S. and other countries will need to wait until later this year, Amazon says Prime Day festivities in India will kick off at midnight on August 6 and continue until August 7. Prime members in the country will be able to avail great deals and discounts on thousands of products, including entertainment offerings.

Rumors about a possible delay started doing the rounds in April, when Reuters published a report claiming Amazon could delay Prime Day until at least August due to the coronavirus pandemic. Since the e-commerce market is witnessing a surge in the U.S. and several other countries due to the pandemic, Amazon is reportedly struggling to meet the increased demand.
