Google Play Movies could soon let you watch hundreds of free movies
Google Play Movies is not like your traditional streaming service with a subscription model. Instead, it offers movies and TV shows to rent or purchase upfront. Only a select few titles are available for free on the service, but we hear that might change soon.
An APK teardown of the Google Play Movies & TV Android app, conducted by XDA Developers, revealed evidence that Google could soon introduce ad-supported movies on the platform. One string of code in particular refers to the availability of “hundreds of movies, just a few ads.”
This suggests that Google could be looking to expand the reach of Play Movies by offering free, ad-supported content, just like it does with YouTube.
There is no indication if Google will adopt this ad-based model for all the titles available on Play Movies, or if it’s meant only for select titles. There’s also no clarity on when this model will be implemented. However it’ll surely boost the adoption of the service and could make it a viable competitor to streaming services.
What do you think of Google Play Movies getting free content supported by ads? Will you use it more often if this happens? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
